COMPARATIVE  AND SUPERLATIVE

Short adjectives ( one or two syllables)

Rich- old- tall- poor – high – hot – cold- fat – big thin – sad – young – large – small- easy – crazy  pretty – happy – strong- new – weak – nice – funny – hungry  - thirsty – lazy – short- cheap

Long adjectives ( two or more syllables )

Beautiful- important- dangerous – generous – expensive – interesting – comfortable – exciting intelligent – sensitive – agreeable – handsome

Comparative of Equality

Formamos o comparativo de igualdade colocando a palavra as antes e depois do adjetivo, tenha ele poucas ou muitas sílabas. Observe os exemplos.

Affirmative sentences Ex :This house is as old as mine. / A Tiger is as dangerous as a Lion.

Negative sentences    Ex:Jonh is not so fat as you. / Jonh is not as fat as you.

Comparative of superiority

Formamos o comparativo de superioridade com adjetivos de uma ou duas sílabas acrescentando er ao final deles, seguido da palavra than ( do que ). Ex:  I am richer than you. / my father is older than my mother. /  You are stronger than me.

a)      Alguns short adjectives dobram a consoante final ao formar o comparativo de superioridade:

Big- bigger than      /    hot- hotter than  /     fat- fatter than      /    thin – thinner than

b)      Os short adjectives terminados por y precedido de consoante mudam o y por i. acrescentando er no final.

Happy- happier than  / easy- easier than   / pretty- prettier than / funny- funnier than

c)      Irregular comparison ( Alguns adjetivos formam o comparative de superioridade de uma forma irregular)

Good- better than              bad- worse than

Ex : Your bicycle is better than mine.            Today I am worse  than yesterday.

Comparative of superiority with long adjectives

Formamos o comparativo de superioridade dos long adjectives antepondo a eles a palavra more e acrescentando, depois deles, a palavra than ( MORE ____________ THAN )

Mary is more beautiful than Jane. /            Your house is more comfortable than mine.                                                                                                                   I-Write the sentences in the comparative of equality:

Superlative

Formamos o superlativo dos short adjectives  seguindo o esquema seguinte colocando o artigo The antes do adjetivo e acrescentando, geralmente est ao final deles. Obseve os exemplos.

Mrs Fortune is the richest woman in my town.( Senhora Fortune é a mulher mais rica em nossa cidade.)

Albert is the tallest boy in my class.(Albert é o garoto mais alto em minha sala.)

It was the coldest day of the year.(Foi o dia mais frio do ano.)

Observações:

Ao Formar o superlativo, alguns short adjectives dobram a consoante final ao formar o comparativo de superioridade:

Big- the  biggest       /    hot- the hottest   /   fat- the fattest       / thin – the thinnest

a)Os short adjectives terminados por y precedido de consoante mudam o y por i. acrescentando est ao formar o superlatvo.

Happy- the happiest  / easy- the easiest  / pretty- the prettiest / funny- the funniest

b)Irregular comparison ( Alguns adjetivos formam o superlativo de uma forma irregular)

Good-  the best  ( o melhor)            bad-  the worst ( o pior )

Ex : It was the happiest day of my life.            Bob is the laziest boy in my class.
